How Millennials Have Played a Role in the Cannabis Industry

In 1830, a doctor in India discovered the pain relieving properties of marijuana, but the medical use of marijuana dates back to as early as 500 BC in Central Asia. Currently, marijuana is legal in 38 states for medical use; it is also legal in 19 states for recreational use as well.

Although still considered illegal at the federal level, more and more supporters are working hard to change this, particularly the millennial generation. Millennials openly support marijuana use, paving the way for the legalization of recreational use of cannabis products in 9 states in 2012.

With the willingness to try new experiences, millennials frequently contribute to social changes. As pioneers in recreational marijuana use, they not only contribute to economic growth but also fuel the transformation of the industry.

What Makes Millenials Major Contributors to Cannabis Change

Millennials are unique in that they straddle the line between a world without the ubiquity of computers, where “kids played outside,” and a world of rapidly evolving technology. As a result, they not only have street smarts but are also tech savvy, allowing them to find creative solutions and create lasting trends. Millennials are also open, quick to adapt, communicative, and quick learners, making them more flexible and inclined to change.

Millennials are avid supporters of recreational marijuana consumption because the majority are well-educated, acting and thinking independently while embracing new trends.

Reports indicate that millennials are the most vocal supporters of recreational marijuana. Over 50% of reported marijuana users belong to the millennial generation. Almost 90% of millennials prefer marijuana because they believe it is safer than booze. Finally, 76% of millennials think that marijuana should be legalized for medical as well as recreational use.

Millennials who get overwhelmed with personal and professional demands can relax and fend off stress with cannabis. Research has shown that consuming marijuana can alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress-related issues.

Moreover, millennials believe that cannabis products do not cause hangovers, unlike alcohol. Besides, marijuana is not toxic and has zero calories, something this generation is concerned about as it relates to wellness and fitness. And because millennials are conscious about health and fitness, they can consume marijuana without the worry of damaging their bodies.

Lastly, the cannabis industry is another opportunity for millennial entrepreneurs to invest. All these greatly contribute to the development and success of the entire marijuana industry.

The cannabis industry has experienced breakthroughs since its legalization in various states. Though there are still a lot of challenges to deal with, millennials are doing their best to break barriers with the MORE Act and achieve legalization for the recreational use of marijuana. Marijuana use is still taboo but millennials are not slowing down their efforts.
